Meanwhile, a murder investigator called Fitch is kidnapped and put in a trap where he must pull his fingers off to prevent electrocution in a filling water basin; he too fails to escape and dies after ignoring a backup call from Banks some years previously. Because of his relationship with Fitch, several police assume Banks is to blame. The station is then visited by a package carrying a pig puppet and a portion of Schenk's tattooed flesh. A little vial inside the box leads the cops to a butcher shop that was originally a hobby business frequented by Banks and his father, retired chief Marcus Banks. When the squad arrives, they find a recording recorder and a skinned body identified as Schenk. Marcus decides to seek out the murderer himself and heads to a warehouse, where he is kidnapped. Garza is abducted and put in a trap in the precinct's cold storage, where she must slice her spinal chord with a blade to stop hot wax from a conduit from spilling down her face. She fails to do so, and when Banks finds her corpse, she dies from her injuries caused by the boiling hot wax.
Banks is apprehended while following a lead and awakens in the warehouse, chained to a pipe with a hacksaw nearby. He contemplates chopping off his arm, but instead uses a bobby pin to get away. He then finds Peter Dunleavy, his old colleague, tied in place after Banks disclosed a murder he committed. A massive glass-crushing machine in front of him has been modified to fire shrapnel at him quickly. Banks can either liberate him or let him die, according to a recording recorder. Despite Banks' best efforts, he is unable to get the key in time. Banks then discovers Schenk, who has been the copycat all along, having faked his own death by using the skinned body of the robber who lured Bozwick into the tunnels. He says that his last name is Emmerson, after Charlie Emmerson, who was shot and executed by Dunleavy after agreeing to testify against a corrupt officer. Marcus, he also admits, intentionally sheltered corrupt cops throughout his term as chief in order to scrub the streets of crime more quickly under Article 8.
Finally, Emmerson puts his trust in Banks by having him do one more test, which shows Marcus restrained and slowly losing blood in mid-air. SWAT is called in after Emmerson dialed 9-1-1 and said he was being chased by a gunman while telling the operator that he was just a citizen. When he delivers Banks the handgun with one bullet in it, he gives him the option to either fire a target that would save Marcus but enable Emmerson to escape, or kill Emmerson and let Marcus bleed to death. Saving his father, Banks shoots the target, allowing his bindings to be undone. He then engages Emmerson in combat. Banks shoots the target. Shortly later, the SWAT squad comes and mistakenly sets off a tripwire, forcing Marcus' chains to tug him upward once again. The movement shows a pistol attached to Marcus' arm, allowing the SWAT squad to mistake him for the gunman and murder him. As Emmerson flees, Banks cries in agony.

Chris Rock pitched Lionsgate Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021) to revive the Saw franchise and his career.
According to Chris Rock, the inspiration for Spiral came from a chance meeting with Lionsgate vice chairman Michael Burns at a friend's wedding in Brazil, and he felt that doing something in the horror genre would be a new direction for him to take in his career, though he planned to include some comedic elements in the film. Rock contacted Lionsgate with his plans to expand the series, and the studio was enthusiastic. Rock's approach was totally respectful of the material's past while reinvigorating the brand with his humour, artistic vision, and enthusiasm for this legendary horror property, according to Lionsgate CEO Joe Drake. According to industry reports, Lionsgate has began conversations for a ninth Saw film in January 2018, however the Spierig Brothers would not be returning. Rock's role was formerly linked to Danny Glover's David Tapp from the original film. Stolberg and Goldfinger decided against it since it didn't pass the smell test. In May 2021, Bousman said that talks are underway to bring Costas Mandylor back as Mark Hoffman in a future film. Bousman and the crew debated whether or not Tobin Bell should reprise his role as Jigsaw until the last day of production, but they decided that having Bell back would make the film seem like the ninth part of the Saw series rather than a standalone picture as it was intended. Because the Jigsaw character was killed off in the third picture, Bousman believed that previous films had done the Jigsaw character a disservice by utilizing flashbacks to bring him into the tale, and he didn't want to make the same error in Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021) or disrespect Bell's legendary portrayal. Bousman contemplated including Bell in Spiral by having him perform a Johnny Cash song during the closing scene, but decided against it because it was too gimmicky.
Why didn't Tobin Bell appear in Spiral (2021)?

Stolberg stated in an interview with Bloody Disgusting that Jigsaw was never included in any draft of the screenplay for Spiral, despite discussions taking place even after the first test screening and throughout post-production. They felt that including Jigsaw would alter the foundation of the story they were trying to achieve, not intending to diminish the character but wanting to place the franchise in a new direction. Due to the timeline of the franchise, Stolberg and Goldfinger proposed at one point to have an after-credits sequence where John Kramer met a young Schenk after the murder of the latter's father and bonded with him, maybe giving him the puppet he later uses as the Spiral (2021) Ki.
It was decided to replace Billy the Puppet with a new puppet in the form of Mr. Snuggles because Bousman felt that if the original Jigsaw was replaced, the original puppet should go and be replaced with a new one so that the new killer cannot be compared. As a Jigsaw copycat, the film's killer differs from the original. The production feared that reusing Bell's voice for Mr. Snuggles could have created questions about the relationship between both killers; an early draft actually featured Jigsaw's voice, only to then be revealed a digitally altered version of his voice; and the story originally had all the speeches as actually being past recordings of Jigsaw's voice using words in a different order to show that the Spiral (2021) Killer had digitally rearranged the words. When they couldn't come up with a replacement for Bell's voice, the filmmakers had a hard time locating one. Several other female, kid, and male voices were auditioned before Bousman finally settled on the computer-simulated voice. Final selection of voice was made two days before sound mix was completed.

The film started pre-production on May 16, 2019. Former series director Darren Lynn Bousman will return to direct the feature, with Burg and Koules serving as producers. In addition to developing the narrative concept, Rock served as an executive producer.

Will there be a continuation of the story told in Spiral: From the Book of Saw?
Twisted Pictures revealed in April 2021 that a sequel film, named Saw X, is in the works. Bousman, on the other hand, felt that the announcement was made too soon, which startled him and the film's producers. He claims that just because they created Spiral (2021) doesn't imply the Saw franchise is dead. Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021)'s arrival does not rule out the possibility of Saw IX. This is not the ninth installment in the Saw series. Jigsaw might very well be followed by Saw IX.
